Hey there and welcome to my blog!
So let’s start off with a little background knowledge. My name is Princess Ashilokun and I am a proud Nigerian who was born and raised in London, Hackney. I’m a spoken word artist (some might say it’s just another fancy way of saying performance poet), an advocate for social change and a Christian with a deep and intense love for the minions from ‘Despicable Me’ (yes…I know, but I’m still unashamed to say it). I’ve just completed my first year as an undergraduate studying English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford and have met some amazing and inspiring people during my time here, (although the academic year seems to have whizzed by and as much as I would have wanted it to last longer, boy am I glad to be rid of Old English!). I’ve been playing rugby for the past 6 years now and currently play for my university’s women’s rugby team, with hopes to move into the first team. I’m a member of quite a few societies such as the African-Caribbean Society, otherwise referred to as the ACS (but mainly because, as of yet, I haven’t exactly gotten round to unsubscribing from the numerous mailing lists I naively signed up to during freshers’ week – sadly I was forewarned and so have no one to blame but myself – in any case, I don’t quite see myself going surfing at any time soon in the city of ‘dreaming spires’).
So…now that we’ve become thoroughly acquainted, I’ll let you in on a little secret. This isn’t exactly my first attempt at blogging – alas that premature endeavor occurred 3 years ago at some obscure time in the year. For those of you who may be interested in knowing why I did not continue it, let’s just say that my levels of procrastination then really knew no bounds and we can promptly leave it at that. If there happen to be any Sherlocks in the making who are reading this and are still curious, then by all means feel free to investigate the tale of the unfinished blog (I’ve not made it terribly hard to find however with only one post it is not particularly interesting). I decided to start this blog so that I would have a space where all the things that I care about, my thoughts and my interests could be collated and gathered in one place.
I do hope you stick around on this blog journey of mine and I look forward to sharing my poems and thoughts with you, as well as my experiences of the world and the varying types of minions (read people) that I have encountered within.
P.S. Just glancing over the number of times that I’ve used the personal pronoun ‘I’ on this About page is making me seriously cringe…but hey, you know what they say! With great blogging, comes great introspective narcissism! Or something like that anyways 🙂
